Introduction to HTML
What HTML actually is, and how a browser turns your text into a page.
- Explain the role of HTML
- Write your first element
- Open a page in a browser
HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is not a programming language: it is a way of describing the meaning and structure of content. A heading is a heading, a paragraph is a paragraph, and a button is a button — HTML says which is which.
Tags, elements and content
You write HTML using tags. Most elements open with a tag like <p> and close with a matching </p>. Everything between them is the content.
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>My first page</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Hello, world.</h1>
<p>I am learning HTML on EduByte.</p>
</body>
</html>- Tag
- The markup itself, such as
<p>or</p>. - Element
- The opening tag, content and closing tag together.
- Attribute
- Extra information inside a tag, such as lang="en".
Your first paragraph
Inside the body, add an <h1> with your name and a <p> that describes what you want to build.
<body>
<!-- add your heading and paragraph here -->
</body>Which element holds the content that is visible on the page?
Make it yours.
